Working Conditions
Working conditions in Switzerland, and especially in St. Moritz, are excellent.
Between employers and employees, the probation period usually consists of the first two or three months of employment, with a notice period ranging from a few days up to a maximum of two weeks. Once a permanent contract is obtained, the notice period increases from one month to six months.
Salaries
Salaries are generally paid monthly. The 13th salary is common and often required by law. In many companies, employees are rewarded with a voluntary bonus at the end of a successful business year.
Deductions and Taxes
Contributions to the mandatory old-age pension scheme (AVS and pension fund), disability insurance (IV), income compensation scheme (EO), and unemployment insurance are deducted directly from the salary.
Social security systems are jointly paid by employers and employees.
Unlike many other countries, taxes are not deducted directly from the salary, but are calculated based on an individually completed tax return.
Social Security
Old-age provision in Switzerland is based on three pillars.
The 1st and 2nd pillars (AVS and pension fund) are mandatory and managed by the state. They are collected through direct salary deductions. The third pillar is voluntary.
First pillar: AVS is based on the principle of solidarity: those who work today pay the pensions of retirees through their AVS contributions.
Second pillar: The pension fund is financed by contributions from the employee and the employer into a personal account. The capital is usually not available until retirement.
Third pillar: These voluntary contributions to a private pension account can be deducted from taxes.
Unemployment insurance is financed by contributions from all workers. In case of unemployment, 70% or 80% of the last salary is paid for up to two years.
